First Totems
8 ½” x 11” pen & ink on paper 1997
( SOLD )

While working on the Campbell River by pass in 1997, our survey took us through a burned out forest area.
I wondered if the shapes left in the burned trees had in some small way been an inspiration for the very
“ First Totem “ pole carvings. I have since come to understand that a more factual explanation would be
that First Nations People were given the ideas of Totem carving through spiritual vision during the sweat
lodge experience. I’m certain that a much more detailed explanation could be added.
Until I am given new information I will leave it like that !
